Are men responsible for keeping women out of some professions?

History is full of women who have done jobs considered suitable only for men but the number of women in unconventional professions has never been higher. From combat pilots to investigative detectives, the head of the Indian missile program and a woman who has scaled the world's seven highest peaks, we look at the challenges they face and what eggs them on to achieve the impossible.

I believe the responsibility lies on the system and inherent culture and not necessarily on a particular gender. There are enough examples of women succeeding without the help of men, and men supporting women in their chosen professions. Also, there are examples of women not letting other women succeed. So I would say more than gender one needs to look at mindset in particular and systems in general that hold women back from doing what they want with their lives.

I agree with the point that women are kept out of some profession. But blaming Men for the same is not the correct thing. It is more of a mental block that has been created by society. If a woman is passionate enough to do a particular job, man has no ability to stop her from doing that job. If you look at the society we leave around, you will find 60 % of the women herself will not do some profession saying she is not allowed to do so. and you will find 40% of women who break the glass ceiling to touch the sky called success. So keeping women out of some profession is majority of the time her "No, I am not allowed" or "What society will think about me?" or "How can i go against the society rules"too. So in my opinion, Keeping women out of some profession is less of Gender biased and more of mentality barrier and all about so called "Society Rules".

I guess society certainly do have some set of beliefs for women, as an example women are not meant for this kind of job but women do have the power to break these kind of barriers..And about men some do exist who always try to dominate their other half

I don't think men are responsible. This is a general way for some women to hide their incompetence, blame men for anything and everything. If there is will, there is a way. But you have to work hard to walk on that way. We men work hard throughout our lives to be employed and then you say we are keeping you out of jobs. Nice brains!

I don't agree at all that in this tech-savvy, smart era, MEN can put aside WOMEN from some professions if WOMEN urge to join those particular professions. This is an era of Women Empowerment & I feel MEN are always the best motivators & guides for us, women to work in any sector without any hesitation. Yep obviously some male chauvinists are there who treat women as their bonded labours but exceptions can't be rule for a democratic, cosmopolitan country like India. We women have reached the top-notch position of every sector with our DURGA - Shakti & of course with the support of Men only. I am proud to be a woman for whom SKY is NOT just the BEGINNING but my limitless LIMIT. Thank You.

In 1980s Shatbhi Basu challenged stereotypes when she set out to pursue a career in bartending which was an all-male industry in the country. Since then women have continuously striven to break the barriers. Do you think men are responsible for keeping women out of some professions or women choose to stay out? Historically productive jobs have been kept a monopoly to males by the patriarchal society and less productive jobs have been given to women. Women may be excellent cooks within the boundary of a house but men will be excellent chefs in hotel industry. More importantly it is not the sphere of job which has been denied to women but the quantum and importance of the job.

Some professions have men on their top bodies who make decisions. Not many would willingly propose for the acceptance of women unless women themselves are desired to. But government does have the power to decide the gender wise recruitments. Here women need to push themselves a little further to gain positions in those professions. Ignorance is another factor that causes few professions having only men. Either women don't know or don't want to struggle for. Unwillingness to struggle is also influenced due to social, political and economic factors.

It's not the men, but the society which is responsible for the status of women. It is expected that a working women has to handle both office and home with full efficiency as she would have had done when she had given her whole time to home, or a man who gives his full efforts to his professional life. Unfortunately nature gives 24 hours equally to all. If children face any problem in upbringing, its the sole responsibility of the mother and not the parents. Specially in India, the father is nowhere to be seen while performing any duties towards the child. Woman being a mother understands her first duty and responsibility towards her child and just cant pass it to someone else. She tries to balance both ends. Her professional life would be the first thing to be struck out from the list. Taking advantage of this situation, especially in private sector, women are paid less; given less scope than men. Then also women do succeed. They don't take failures so easily. However now a days it is taking toll on their physical as well as mental health. This will affect the whole society and not only women!

Some men and women are of the view that certain professions are just not fit for women. Home and Kids - women can manage them better than men, so they are good for Human Resources and Administration in Companies but not fit to be a CEO or CFO. Though a lot of women are challenging these notions. This has led to a certain gendering of roles: Roles that are fit for men. Roles that are fit for women. On the other hand, some people feel women keep themselves out fearing their safety, the need to balance work and home and at times they generally do not feel motivated enough to break the barrier if their husbands or partners are doing well.
